Claire Lui is 12/5 this year, it’s just that those wins were all at the lowly level of W25. While the 20 year old made the finals and semi-finals of her last three tournaments, losing to the likes of Robie Anderson, Varvara Lepchenko, and Danielle Lao is a reality check.
Technically speaking, Lui as the pedigree to be at her best on hard-courts compared but she will need to raise her game!
We were not surprised when Elisabetta Cocciaretto was beaten in the first round of qualification in Monterrey. Afterall, 20 hours earlier she had played the semi-final of Guadalajara, meaning it was a rushed preparation following the 800KM journey. We suggest concentrating on positives from Guadalajara, were she beat the likes of Podoroska, and Davis.
The 20 year old Italian is close to her career high rank of 112. Despite not having many miles on the clock, she’s proven herself to be decent on hard court. With all due respect, her level should be good enough to get through qualification!
