ST LIEGE vs GENT – BELGIUM JUPILER
Before the season started, St Liege was expected to compete for the European places. As it stands, Les Rouge are just 12th in the table. To be analytical, the hosts could still salvage their season by making up the 3 points needed to get in the Europa League Group. However, wanting is one thing, and being capable is another.
When Mbaye Leye took over the management on 30 December, St Liege did respond by winning their next four games. More recently the league games haven’t been working out (no wins in 8), and now they have a different target. Les Rouges are in the final of the Belgium cup and will play Genk on 25 April, winning that would get them into Europa league qualification!
Despite having a strong squad on paper, Gent disappointed through the first part of the season. One of the excuses put forward was having to compete in the Europa League. Fortunes changed for the better when the Buffalo’s were knocked out of that competition, and Hein Vanhaezebrouck took charge. Under the 57-year-old Gent are 9-6-4 since the 13 December. They have beaten league leaders Club Brugge (0-1) on the road, and more recently they lost just one of their last 11 league fixtures.
Gent already beat St Liege this season, more of the same is expected!
