We haven’t been offering much US sports to followers of the site, because to be quite honest we like to keep it for ourselves. However, that’s about to change, and we have bought in US specialists for the challenge ahead. As you will notice, these previews are more for the US market than Europe, so you will need to get used to the terms.

Detroit Tiger

s (52-63) vs. Minnesota Twins (58-56)

In this AL Central division matchup we have 2 teams trending in opposite directions. The Twins are winners of their last 6 including the 1st game of their 3 game series against the Tigers who come into tonight as losers of 6 of their last 7. Yesterday's game saw the Twins continue their hot hitting and bang out 16 hits coupled with a solid effort from the bullpen to handily beat their division foes by a score of 9-4. The Twins pushed their record to 58-56 and remain in the hunt for a playoff spot. The Tigers meanwhile continued their downward trend and dropped to 11 games under .500 with no realistic playoff chances.

Jose Berrios (10-5 3.86 ERA) starts for Minnesota. The 23 year old Puerto Rican in his 2nd year has proven to be a solid starter for the Twins having started the season 7-1 with a 2.67 ERA in his first 8 starts. While he has struggled to find consistency of late, posting a 4.75 ERA in his last 6 starts, he still has managed 3 quality starts in that span a

nd his poor performance in the other 3 can be attributed to facing 3 top hitting ball clubs in the Rangers, Dodgers and Astros.

Jordan Zimmermann (7-9 5.27 ERA) starts for Detroit. The 8 year veteran has had little to celebrate this year as he owns the 3rd worst ERA among all qualified starters. Interesting to note is that his xFIP is exactly same as his ERA meaning that his 5.27 ERA is a good indicator of his ability, which is a horrible pitcher! Though Zimmermann has been decent of late, posting 4 quality starts in his last 5, he has been terrible in facing the Twins this year, posting an 0-2 record with 10 runs allowed in 8.1 IP.

As stated above whether you go by sabermetrics or traditional ERA, Zimmermann has been one of the worst starting pitchers this year. Today he will face a red hot hitting team in the Twins who have an OPS of .847 and team WAR of 1.8 in the last 7 days (4th and 2nd respectively among all teams). While the Tigers are also a good hitting team, their OPS is over 100 points lower against RHP than against LHP (.729 vs .841) and their OPS and team WAR in the last 7 days rank 24th and 23rd.

The Tigers also own the worst bullpen in the league and while the Twins' relievers aren't great by any stretch, they are still a step above Detroit's and furthermore have been rather decent of late. Detroit does have home field advantage here but the Twins are still vying for a playoff spot while the Tigers are merely playing the season out so motivation is also key here. We like Minnesota at evens or a small favorite!
