Someone asked us if we are sending out bets for the qualifications in Birmingham, the answer is no. The reason for that is the bookmakers low limits and the weakness of the betting market in general. While betting a few Euro might work for some, it wouldn’t be worth our time or resources. In fact, we have been very disappointed with the limits at this weeks tournaments, because it has often meant we needed to dip the market a few times.

Looking ahead we are very happy to see Birmingham and Mallorca on next weeks WTA radar, because we killed it at these two tournaments last year. Nevertheless, we still have a bit of business to conclude at this weeks Hertogenbosch and Nottingham, and it goes without saying that we are keen to close out in style. For the website we are offering one bet at todays Nottingham, albeit the preview is short because the match is down to start in two hours!

In the last round Magdalena Rybarikova continued her love affair on this surface with a comfortable win over the much improved Kristie Ahn. Despite the lower rankings of these two players it was a good class match and their was enough to suggest Rybarikova was at the top of her game.

The only slight doubt we have about Rybarikova is her energy level, because it can be difficult to win back to back tournaments. However, on that note she appeared as fresh as a daisy yesterday, and a win today would take her back into the top hundred. On that note we need to take into consideration that Magdalena missed a large part of last season, so she should be rated much higher than her current rank of 107!

We mentioned at the start of the week that we thought Konta would be short of peak fitness, so she might not be at her best for this tournament. And, while we still believe that’s the case, she’s still been good enough to make the semi finals here. However, winning against easier opponents is one thing, and this will be the Brits biggest challenge to date.

Rybarikova is playing excellent tennis, and she’s clearly at her best on this surface. On paper we can’t say their is much between this pair, so taking the +3.5 games start is obviously the way forward.
